Key takeaways

  • AiDial and Vertical AI both score 95 of 100 on our 6 measures, read on 8 November 2026. AiDial takes first place on the tie-break because its entry plan costs A$149 a month against A$299 for ours.
  • Virtual Headquarters scores 85, the highest of the human services. Its terms add A$0.60 a call on Message Express and A$1.00 on Virtual Receptionist outside 8am to 6pm on weekdays and on national public holidays.
  • OfficeHQ charges an after-hours surcharge but prints no amount, so it scores 5 of 20 on the night rate. Overflow on some of its plans is answered from offices in New Zealand, the UK and the US.
  • Johnni answers nights, weekends and public holidays on every plan from A$44 a month, paid annually and before GST. Ringing an on-call roster until someone accepts is sold only as a custom build, which costs it 10 points.
  • Write down what counts as urgent before you sign, then test that rule on a free trial or a demo line. Every provider here can transfer a call, and only your rule decides which callers reach the on-call phone at 2am.

What an after-hours answering service is and is not

An after-hours answering service picks up your business line while the office is shut, on weeknights, at weekends and on public holidays. On a closed line it takes messages, books or moves appointments where it can, and puts a genuine emergency through to the person on call.

Two kinds of provider sell it in Australia. A human service sends your calls to a receptionist team that reads a script you approve, and it usually bills by the call. An AI service puts a voice agent on the line that follows rules you write, and it bills by the call or by the minute.

It does not replace the person on call. Neither kind can fix a problem that needs your staff, and both act only on the escalation rule you hand them. A loose rule sends every caller to your on-call mobile, or none of them.

Night calls are a real share of the load. Across the AI receptionists we run for Australian businesses, 28 per cent of calls in a 90-day window in 2026 arrived outside 9am to 5pm on weekdays. Weekday evenings after 5pm carried 12.9 per cent of calls, more than the whole weekend at 7.5 per cent.

Settle two things before you compare prices: which calls count as urgent, and who should answer them at 2am. The measures below show how each provider handles both.

How we ranked these after-hours answering services

We fixed the 6 measures and their weights before we scored any provider, then read every figure on the provider's own pages on 8 November 2026. A measure a provider does not publish scores 0, and its cell reads Not published. A tie goes to the lower published entry price, since a quiet night line usually runs on the entry plan.

Prices are the ones each page prints. The human services and Johnni price before GST, and AiDial's page does not say whether its prices include it.

The best after-hours answering services in 2026

We scored 6 after-hours answering services and list the top 5 here in score order. We make Vertical AI.

It ties for first and ranks second on the entry-price tie-break, and Virtual Headquarters, Johnni and OfficeHQ each score higher than us on trying before you buy, because they offer a free trial and we offer a demo line. Ruby Receptionist scores 40 and sits in the side-by-side table.

  1. 1. AiDial, best for the lowest entry price on an AI line processed in Australia

AiDial scores 95 of 100 and ranks first on the tie-break. Its AI Receptionist plans cost A$149 a month for 60 calls on Core, A$249 for 150 on Scale and A$449 for 400 on Max, read on aidial.com.au on 8 November 2026. One call unit covers up to 10 connected minutes, and extra calls cost A$2.49, A$1.99 or A$1.49 by plan.

Every plan includes 24/7 call answering at the same unit price, so a 3am call uses one unit like a 3pm call. The pricing page lists warm handover, direct transfer to landlines and mobiles, and transfer rules that follow your hours and public holidays. Its home page says those rules can vary by urgency, caller intent and department, and that you choose approved contacts for dated call cover.

AiDial says its AI is hosted and processed in Australia, with data stored in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. A Compliance Pack at A$100 a month adds what it calls 100 per cent Australian data residency and no overseas AI model calls. Its FAQ makes the customer responsible for telling callers they are speaking to an AI.

The company is headquartered on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Setup fees are set in each customer's scope of work, and the page does not say whether its prices include GST. It offers no free trial, and its AI assistant answers 02 6422 0000.

Best suited for: A business that wants night and weekend calls answered by AI at a fixed price per call, with processing kept in Australia. It fits a line where most after-hours calls are short and an urgent one must reach a named on-call contact.

  2. 2. Vertical AI, best for editing your own after-hours rules on a per-minute plan

Vertical AI scores 95 of 100 and ranks second on the entry-price tie-break. Our Starter plan costs A$299 a month for 500 minutes, with 3 agents, 1 number and 2 concurrent calls. Growth costs A$599 for 1,000 minutes and Scale A$999 for 2,000, each extra minute costs A$0.40, and no plan carries an after-hours rate.

The agent answers at 2am, at weekends and on public holidays, on the number your customers already ring. You write the rule for what counts as urgent, and the agent transfers that call warm or blind on every plan. On a warm transfer the person on call hears who is ringing and why, then presses 1 to take it, and the agent takes the details if nobody does.

Each agent keeps the whole call in Australia by default, from the call audio and speech recognition to the voice, the AI model, the recordings and the transcripts. Recordings are kept 30 days on Starter, 90 days on Growth and for a period you choose on Scale.

Across the AI receptionists we run, 28 per cent of calls arrive outside weekday business hours. We offer no free trial, and our demo agent answers 1800 570 693. Our Launch build, set up by our team, costs A$2,490 and goes live in 5 days.

Best suited for: A business that wants to change its own night rules, greeting and answers in the agent editor without waiting on a provider. It fits a line with many short calls, where 500 minutes stretch further than a fixed count of calls.

  3. 3. Virtual Headquarters, best for a person on the night line at a published surcharge

Virtual Headquarters scores 85 of 100, the highest of the human services. Its after-hours page, read on 8 November 2026, lists Message Express 50 at A$115 a month for 50 calls and Virtual Receptionist 50 at A$185. MyAssistant starts at A$49 a month plus A$2.99 a minute, and every price is before GST.

Its terms add a surcharge to each call answered outside 8am to 6pm on weekdays, or on Australian national public holidays, in your local time. The surcharge is A$0.60 a call on Message Express, A$1.00 on Virtual Receptionist and A$0.80 a minute on MyAssistant and MyDiary. By our arithmetic from those figures, 60 after-hours calls a month on Message Express 50 cost A$175.50 before GST.

The after-hours FAQ says its team assesses how urgent a call is and escalates it to on-call staff when needed. The page names Australian receptionists, gives an office in North Sydney and says the company has answered calls for more than 20 years.

It offers a free 7-day trial with no lock-in contract. Its terms run month to month, and you can end the service by email with 3 days' notice. Every plan includes a free local number, and a 1300 or 1800 number costs from A$5 a month.

Best suited for: A business whose after-hours callers expect a person, and whose night volume is low enough that a per-call surcharge stays small. It fits a practice or office that already has a written escalation script for its on-call staff.

  4. 4. Johnni, best for a low monthly entry price with a free trial on an AI line

Johnni scores 83 of 100. Its plans cost A$44 a month for 60 minutes on Pay As You Go, A$134 for 200 on Solo, A$269 for 600 on Starter and A$809 for 1,500 on Growth, paid annually and before GST, read on johnni.ai on 8 November 2026. Minutes past the allowance cost A$0.50 on the smallest plan down to A$0.35 on Growth.

Every plan answers 24/7, including nights, weekends and public holidays, at the same per-minute price, and each includes a warm call transfer. Ringing an on-call roster until someone accepts is listed among its custom builds, so it scores 10 of 20 on urgent calls. Its home page says the agent then texts both the operator and the caller to say who is coming.

Johnni's privacy policy, effective 4 November 2026, stores personal information on servers in Australia, the United States and the EU. That puts it on 8 of 15 for who answers and where.

Johnni is built in Brisbane, and Brodie Legget is its founder. It offers a 7-day free trial with 30 free setup minutes, no setup fee and no lock-in, and SMS alerts cost A$50 a month extra. Its demo line is 07 4519 7035, and its home page shows 5.0 from 19 Google reviews.

Best suited for: A trade or service business that wants a low monthly price and a trial before it commits. It fits a team that accepts some data stored outside Australia, or will pay for a custom build to get on-call roster ringing.

  5. 5. OfficeHQ, best for a large receptionist team with 24/7 overflow

OfficeHQ scores 63 of 100, and its after-hours page, read on 8 November 2026, lists MessageExpress from A$25 a month, MyReceptionist from A$35, and MyAssistant and MyDiary from A$50. Each price is marked plus GST and an after-hours calls surcharge. Neither that page nor its pricing page prints the surcharge or a call allowance, so it scores 10 of 20 on price and 5 of 20 on the night rate.

After-hours answering is an add-on to any subscription, and without it calls are answered from 8am to 6pm on weekdays. The page says its receptionists are available 24/7. They use call scripting to decide when a call needs an emergency response and transfer it to on-call staff, and MyAssistant adds escalation management.

About 90 per cent of its Australian team, receptionists included, works in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland. Overflow on MessageExpress and MyReceptionist can be answered from offices in New Zealand, the UK and the US, and MyAssistant and MyDiary use a UK team for after-hours overflow.

OfficeHQ says more than 70,000 businesses have chosen it, and it shows 4.8 stars from 155 Google reviews. It says it answers within 15 seconds on average, offers a free 7-day trial on MyReceptionist and runs month to month.

Best suited for: A business that wants a large receptionist team and will confirm the after-hours surcharge in writing before it signs. It fits a caller base that accepts overflow answered from overseas offices at busy times.

Questions

On the pages we read on 8 November 2026, AI services start at A$44 a month on Johnni, A$149 on AiDial and A$299 on Vertical AI. Human services start at A$115 a month for 50 calls on Virtual Headquarters' Message Express 50, before GST and its after-hours surcharge.

Virtual Headquarters adds A$0.60 to A$1.00 a call outside 8am to 6pm on weekdays and on national public holidays. OfficeHQ charges a surcharge it does not print, and the 3 AI services we scored charge one rate at every hour.

You give it a rule for what counts as urgent and a number to send those calls to. Virtual Headquarters and OfficeHQ say their receptionists escalate or transfer such calls, and AiDial and Vertical AI transfer them by rules you set. Johnni lists on-call roster ringing among its custom builds.

A human service suits callers who expect a person and a low night volume, because each night call can carry a surcharge. An AI service suits a busier line, or one with short and repeatable calls, at one rate around the clock.

Virtual Headquarters names Australian receptionists, and AiDial and Vertical AI process calls in Australia. OfficeHQ can send overflow to offices in New Zealand, the UK and the US, and Johnni stores data on servers in Australia, the US and the EU.

Virtual Headquarters, OfficeHQ, Johnni and Ruby Receptionist each offer a free 7-day trial. AiDial and Vertical AI offer a demo line to ring instead, on 02 6422 0000 and 1800 570 693.

Johnni and AiDial name public holidays in their cover, and Vertical AI answers on public holidays too. Virtual Headquarters answers them and applies its after-hours surcharge.
